Inheritance of the chloroplast genome in Sorbus aucuparia L. (Rosaceae).

Chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) inheritance was investigated in Sorbus aucuparia using progenies obtained from six controlled crosses between individuals of known haplotype. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification, followed by restriction analysis, was used to characterize 248 offspring for either of two polymorphic cpDNA fragments. All offspring exhibited the maternal haplotype, which indicates ...

Regional population dynamics define the local genetic structure in Sorbus torminalis.

Recent changes in sylvicultural practices in Central Europe have created forests with closed canopies, and tree species preferring open and sunny forests have declined in area and abundance. This led to increased isolation of populations of many rare insect-pollinated, fleshy-fruited species with a naturally scattered distribution. To gain insight into the regional population dynamics of such s...

Cytotype diversity in the Sorbus complex (Rosaceae) in Britain: sorting out the puzzle.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS Large-scale ploidy surveys using flow cytometry have become an essential tool to study plant genome dynamics and to gain insight into the mechanisms and genetic barriers framing ploidy diversity. As an ideal complement to traditional techniques such as chromosome counting, the analysis of cytotype diversity in plant systems such as Sorbus provides primary investigation into ...

Pollen flow in the wildservice tree, Sorbus torminalis (L.) Crantz. I. Evaluating the paternity analysis procedure in continuous populations.

The joint development of polymorphic molecular markers and paternity analysis methods provides new approaches to investigate ongoing patterns of pollen flow in natural plant populations. However, paternity studies are hindered by false paternity assignment and the nondetection of true fathers. To gauge the risk of these two types of errors, we performed a simulation study to investigate the imp...

Population structure at the S-locus of Sorbus aucuparia L. (Rosaceae: Maloideae).

Low sequence divergence within functional alleles is predicted for the self-incompatibility locus because of strong negative frequency-dependent selection. Nevertheless, sequence variation within functional alleles is essential for current models of the evolution of new mating types. We genotyped the stylar self-incompatibility RNase of 20 Sorbus aucuparia from a population in the Pyrenees moun...
